Overview
A work-based NVQ for operators who prepare and use an approved crane or specialist lifting machine to lift and transfer loads.

Who this NVQ is for
Experienced operators of an approved crane or specialist lifting machine, including excavator cranes where the selected unit and evidence are suitable.

Learning outcomes
On completion, candidates will be able to:
• Follow the lift plan, safe system of work and workplace communication arrangements.
• Confirm the machine, configuration, load information, ground conditions and lifting area are suitable.
• Inspect and prepare the selected machine, safety devices and operator controls.
• Maintain stability and operate within rated capacity and configuration limits.
• Lift, transfer and land loads using clear communication and controlled movements.
• Shut down, secure and report defects, changes or unsafe conditions.

Assessment
Workplace competence assessment and portfolio of evidence, using methods such as assessor observation, professional discussion, questioning, work products and suitable witness testimony. Internally assessed and quality assured by the centre, with external quality assurance by ProQual.
