The CPCS A12 course covers safe operation of a 180-degree excavator above 5 tonnes. Training focuses on machine checks, travel, siting, bucket and quick-hitch use, excavation, loading, grading and shutdown.

Learning outcomes
• Explain operator duties, hazards, legislation and safe working practices.
• Use the operator’s manual and identify major components, controls, safety devices and machine limitations.
• Complete checks, minor adjustments, PPE selection and safe access.
• Prepare, travel and site the excavator safely for digging, loading and grading.
• Select, fit and use buckets and quick-hitch systems correctly.
• Excavate, load and grade to given information and tolerances, reinstate the area and shut down safely.
