The CPCS A56B course covers safe operation of an articulated-chassis dump truck of any size. It includes checks, loaded and unloaded travel, loading, load security, discharge, environmental controls, machine transport and shutdown.
Who this course suits
New or experienced operators who use articulated-chassis rear-tipping dump trucks of any size.
Learning outcomes
• Explain construction hazards, safe working practices and the responsibilities of an articulated dump truck operator.
• Find and use relevant information in the manufacturer’s handbook, operator’s manual and other approved sources.
• Identify the dump truck’s major components, signs, decals and controls and explain their functions.
• Complete pre-operational checks in line with manufacturer and legislative requirements and report defects.
• Select and maintain the PPE and safety control equipment required for dump truck work.
• Get into and out of the machine using safe access and egress procedures.
• Prepare the dump truck for movement on site and, where applicable, highway travel.
• Travel and manoeuvre the dump truck safely, loaded and unloaded, over varied terrain and inclines.
• Manoeuvre safely in restricted spaces while maintaining visibility and agreed communication.
• Complete the required safety checks at loading and discharge areas.
• Position the dump truck safely and efficiently to receive loads.
• Keep loads within capacity and maintain load integrity and security.
• Transfer loads safely to the required locations using designated routes.
• Discharge loads safely while maintaining machine stability and exclusion zones.
• Explain environmental considerations, including emissions, fuel efficiency, waste and spill controls.
• Explain safe loading and unloading procedures when transporting the machine.
• Complete end-of-work, parking, shutdown, isolation and security procedures.
